Activities for Your Kids - Right in the Classroom

How Does
Milk Get From
Cow to You?

This great question can be approached several ways.

Sequentialization can be taught by making an accordian book with the steps in picture form ie. Cow, milking parlor, testing, tanker truck, dairy, testing, pasteurization, etc.

Another way is for students to write a story or keep a journal about their trip to the dairy farm.

A math lesson could be taught figuring out how much food and water a whole herd of cows would eat and drink. How many cows would be needed to provide enough milk for a class of 28 children, drinking 3 glasses a milk a day.

Science lessons on pasteurization, homogenization, states of matter in relationship to ice cream, cheesemaking, etc. can be developed.

Health can spend time on the nutrients in milk and their function inside the body.

The Dairy and Nutrition has several references:

Milk From Cow to You packet has poster, handouts and tip sheet for field trips.

A great website for kids written by kids about dairying is www. cownus.com . Check it out.

Farm Bureau also has a Farming the Classroom program with dairy as one of the components.
