Kids have fun with 3-A-Day

Preschoolers Learn to Count:
1,2,3 Dairy a Day!

Preschoolers in Headstart in Franklin and Fayette Counties are learning their numbers with the help of Donna Handley-Lynch, Extension agent and educator for the Family Nutrition Program. Miss Donna presents an exciting program to 3, 4, 5 year olds. The children learn that milk comes from a cow and helps build strong bones and teeth. They learn that milk can come in many forms that they like: cheese, yogurt, different flavors of milk, i.e. Pink milk (strawberry). Ice cream also has calcium. Three servings a day is recommended and every child knows this.

One project Miss Donna has the children and parents do together is to clip out pictures from magazines, newspaper ads, etc of foods that have dairy products in them and make a picture collage. They are to list what are the foods the children and parents like that have dairy in them. After turning this in they receive a surprise. Even after a few months, the children remember that they need 3-A-Day of Dairy. Good health starts with dairy!
